Being productive can always be challenging, no matter how much you have to get done, or how much you want to be productive. However, as many people know, many times you are the biggest obstacle getting in your own way when it comes to being as productive as you want. If you know you are holding yourself back from being productive, then it is important that you keep a few basic tips in mind that will help you get out of your own way. Keep these simple strategies at heart whenever you think you are not being as productive as you can, and you will quickly realize that you can get a lot more done than you ever imagined.

Stop Thinking and Start Doing

Many people struggle with getting things done because they are constantly thinking about what they need to do, or planning on ways to be more productive, instead of actually digging in and starting to be productive. Instead of thinking so much, start doing. The hardest step is always the first one, but taking this action-centered approach is typically the best way to start being as productive as possible.

Put a Plan Together and Lay Out the Steps You Need to Take

In order to be as productive as possible you need to have a set plan in place that lays out the steps you need to take. Having a plan and a checklist of items that you can cross off, is a great way to make sure that you are staying on task and continuing to get the little things done that will help you accomplish your bigger goal.

Re-Evaluate the Steps In Your Plan If You Feel Overwhelmed

It can be easy to start working on being more productive, only to find that you are overwhelmed by all you have to get done. If this happens, go back to the steps in your outlined plan and re-evaluate them if necessary. Tweaking your plan along the way will help you be more consistently productive, and is far more beneficial than succumbing to the feelings of being overwhelmed.

Stop Focusing on Failing

If you think you are experiencing some type of setback or failure, ignore it and move on. If you focus on failing or a fear of failing it will only deter you on your path to being productive. This is a distraction and a negative one that can get you off course. Keep negative thoughts like this out of your mind, or you will only stop being as productive as you can be.

Don’t Let Your Friends Distract You

It can be easy to have friends and family around you that distract you from getting things done. While it may seem fun to spend a night out on the town instead of meeting your goals, if you do this too often, you can seriously get off track. Good friends are those that support you and want you to be productive. If you let the people around you act as constant distractions, then you will never be as productive as you want to be.

Automate Mundane Tasks That Push You Off Track

If there are certain tasks that tend to put you off track, make sure that you move them to one time of the day and get them all done at once. If sending invoices to clients gets you off track, then hire someone to do it, if paying bills is a distraction then automate your bill pay system. Try to do mundane tasks early on in the morning so you can get them done with and move on to bigger and better things. Interspersing these tasks throughout the day will get you off focus and prevent you from being as productive as you want to be.
