There are so many people today that struggle from one common issue: they don’t get enough sleep. The human body really does need between seven and eight hours of sleep a night, but most people are not getting even close to that much sleep. Whether it’s children keeping you up at night, or the demands of your job having you working late into the night, sleep is seemingly becoming harder and harder to come by for so many busy people today.

However, while most people don’t think they have time to squeeze in seven hours a night, getting only a few hours of sleep per night actually has a number of side effects, much worse than you feeling tired in the morning. A lack of sleep can actually wreak havoc on your body and have some pretty serious health repercussions. It is important that you know the facts and truly realize what a lack of sleep can do to your body. It may just the boost you need in order to convince yourself to get more sleep.

You Experience More Headaches and Migraines

When you don’t get enough sleep, one of the biggest side effects is the amount of headaches and migraines that you get. If you do not understand why you are constantly getting annoying headaches that prevent you from getting work done, the answer may be in your lack of sleep. The body needs to sleep in order to recover and function in the way it is supposed to. Chronic headaches are just a side effect of your body trying to get back on track.

Think about how much time you waste trying to overcome headaches during the day. Whether it requires you to take a nap, take a break from work, go get an Advil, or just simply sit at your desk and not work as efficiently as you can, headaches can takes a large chunk of time out of your day. Instead of dealing with the pain and inconvenience, you could instead get an extra hour or two of sleep per night and stop dealing with these headaches.

Most people know that when they don’t get enough sleep they start becoming more irritable. This should come as no surprise to anyone who doesn’t get enough sleep. However, most people don’t realize what this irritability can really do to their personal life and their mental health and well-being. Living in a constant state of irritation can have an impact on your social life and the relationships in your life. It can also increase your chances for developing depression. No one should ever live in a constant state of irritation, just because they are not getting enough sleep.

You Eat More Snacks and Gain Weight

When you are tired, you are likely to try anything in order to get an extra boost of energy to get you through the day. For some people this means tons of coffee or sugary sodas, for others this means lots of snacking. No matter what your vice is or what you use in order to stay awake or get sugar and caffeine into your system, chances are it is not good for you or your waistline. Don’t be surprised if this takes a toll on your productivity as well. Most people who don’t get enough sleep tend to gain weight because of all of the unhealthy decisions they make during the day to help them feel energized. Keep this in mind when you are trying to stay up late into the night; is it worth it in order to stay up for an extra hour?
